Harare is the capital of Zimbabwe and a bustling city of almost 2 million people. It may not have its former glory, but you cannot take away the natural beauty of the flowering trees and lush green parks. African Unity Square, Heroes Acre, and the National Gallery are still just as interesting. But the real reason why people come here is to enjoy the proximity of African wildlife. There are any number of possibilities for safaris and nature exploration on the outskirts. You can go to Lake Chivero, Mukuvisi Woodlands, and the Larvon Bird Gardens. If you get a car for hire in Harare, your forays both within and outside the city will be more convenient and faster. You can easily widen your horizons to include destinations on the borders with Zambia and Mozambique.
The traditional tourist in Harare cannot miss African Unity Square, Heroes Acre and some trinket shopping in the Mbare Musika, the main market for traders where you can get anything from spears to masks and craft items. Get a car for rent in Harare and visit the Mbare market, about 10 minutes from the city center. Another major attraction is the National Gallery. Do not miss the rhino sculpture at the Harare Gardens. The tobacco auction floor is also an amazing sight, if you happen to be here when it is open. For a sweeping view of the city, head for the Kopje – a granite hill in central Harare.
While a city tour is genuinely exotic and interesting, the real fun begins only when you head for the outskirts. You can see elephants out in the wild in the Mukuvisi Woodlands, just a few miles out of the city. The Larvon Bird Gardens has 180 bird species, and the Kuimba Shiri Bird Garden also has Snake World ,which houses a huge collection of Africa's deadliest snakes. Lake Chivero has a game reserve, and the Lion and Cheetah Park should get top billing in your itinerary. The famed Balancing Rocks can be seen in Epworth, about 8 miles from Harare.
If you are a safari-minded tourist, then you may want to check out the Safari Lodge on the shores of Lake Chivero. But if you just need a hotel in the city, there is plenty of choice. The Holiday Inn Harare is quite popular, affordable, and rated highly by guests who stayed there. The top rated hotel is the Meikles Hotel on Jason Moyo Avenue. Another good choice is the Bronte Hotel on Baines Avenue.
While Harare is no slouch in the wildlife safari area, you can probably do much better if you are willing to travel to the country's borders. Book your car rental in Harare right now and plan for the most popular safari itineraries in Zimbabwe, including Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park, and Lake Kariba. Hwange and Victoria Falls are located past Bulawayo and along the border across from Livingstone in Zambia. You have the Matusadona National Park before Lake Kariba, which straddles the Zimbabwe-Zambia border. You also have the choice of heading towards Mutare, near the Mozambique border, where you can explore the Rhodes Lnyanga National Park. If you are up for another drive from Mutare, the Indian Ocean port of Beira in Mozambique is just three hours away.
