Zambia is a land-locked country in southern Africa. It shares borders with a host of countries including Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique, Malawi, and Tanzania, among others. One side of the famed Victoria Falls is near the town of Livingstone in Zambia. The country also offers a vast collection of game reserves and national parks for an African safari experience. The tropical heat and humidity are high when it rains in summer from November to April. The country's population clocks in at 13.5 million, including the two million people in the capital city of Lusaka. Get a car for hire in Zambia and you can move around in Lusaka and Livingstone and visit popular tourist destinations nearby such as Siavonga.
If you are flying into Zambia, you will likely be landing at Lusaka. It is a sprawling metropolis with suburbs and make-shift towns. Get a car for rent in Zambia and visit attractions such as the Anglican Cathedral and the National Museum on Independence Avenue. The Soweto Market is a good place to spend some time checking out the wares on sale. You can get a mild and urbanized wildlife experience at the Lilayi Game Ranch and Munda Wanga Environmental Park.
A three hour drive on the T2 and M15 will bring you to Siavonga, on Lake Kariba at the Zambia-Zimbabwe border. Siavonga on the north shore is the best place for a pleasant lakeshore getaway. Apart from boating, fishing and other recreational activities, you can also visit the Kariba Dam Wall and power station on the Zambezi River. You might be able to visit a crocodile farm where they collect thousands of crocodile eggs and raise the crocs for harvesting.
This town named after legendary explorer Dr. David Livingstone is the primary gateway to Victoria Falls and the reason why most people come to Zambia. Livingstone is a good seven hour drive from Siavonga on the T1. Just south of Livingstone, the Zambezi River turns from a gentle giant into a raging monster rushing through gorges after thundering down almost 330 feet down the sheer basalt cliffs. Apart from vantage points nearby and a visit to the Boiling Pot down in the gorge, you must also get the view from the Victoria Falls Bridge and Knife Edge Bridge. Visit Mukuni Village, Victoria Falls Field Museum, and also Mosi O Tunya National Park. You may also cross over to the town of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe to get a better view from the other side.
Zambia has a lot more to offer apart from the cities and attractions in the southern region. Book your car rental in Zambia right now and plan for a road trip to Chingola in the Copperbelt or to Chipata in eastern Zambia and then up north to Mbala. Chipata is the gateway across to Lilongwe in Malawi and offers prospects of safaris in both South and North Luangwa National Parks. From Chipata, drive to Kasama and then to Mbala near the Tanzanian border. This northern region offers you a whole new set of game reserves and large lakes for safaris. If this sounds way too much driving, then just hop across the border from Livingstone to Chobe National Park in Botswana for a big five game African safari.
