The Golden Gate Bridge - San Francisco

"At last the mighty task is done;
Resplendent in the western sun
The Bridge looms mountain high;
Its titan piers grip ocean floor,
Its great steel arms link shore with shore,
Its towers pierce the sky."

So wrote Joseph P. Strauss, the Chief Engineer for the Golden Gate Bridge, on its completion in 1937. San Francisco's 9,000 ft premier landmark was - and remains - a major engineering feat. While experts at the time considered it impossible to build such a bridge, some four years and $35 million later, the finishing touches were being to one of the wonders of the modern world; a guaranteed passage to and from Northern California.

Driving the Golden Gate Bridge is an extraordinary experience. Its very existence represents a struggle to defy the naysayers who said it couldn't be built. As such, it's a physical embodiment of a city that continues to innovate. What's more, it's a tribute to the workers' four-year odyssey against the elements. Relentless winds, unpredictable fog and treacherous tides all had to be overcome to will the masterpiece into existence. It also remembers the eleven workers who lost their lives along the way.

Become One With An Icon

Our video lays on some of the head-spinning facts and figures that accompany the iconic orange landmark. Certainly the only bridge to have ever appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone (February, 1976), the Golden Gate is considered the most recognisable landmark in the western hemisphere, second only to the Statue of Liberty in New York. Over 100,000 vehicles pass along its path each day as it makes a magnificent welcoming gesture to visitors and immigrants alike.

Fly Through The Clouds of The Famous San Francisco Fog

Visually, it's unmatched. The bridge, with its Art Deco sensibilities, connects two pieces of gorgeous land, with the Presidio Park to the south and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area to the north. Above and below, the turbulent waters of the bay, the famously unpredictable white fog and the California sky make for an ever-changing vista. It's a photographer's paradise, and not to be missed.
