Native Americans of the Occaneechi and Eno tribes were the earliest settlers of Durham. Later English, Irish and Scots also came to this city. During the Civil War era, Durham was mostly an agricultural town. When the railroad industry started flourishing in the 19th century, Durham began to develop, as locomotives needed to take a stop to refuel with wood and water. After the passage of various military troops through the city, the demand for Durham's tobacco increased, resulting in a profitable trade. Eventually the city was incorporated in 1869 and named after Dr. Bartlett Durham, who gave his land to build the Durham station.
Durham's local culture is full of colour and entertainment. The city hosts various festivals like ablues festival, a jazz festival, art exhibitions, symphony concerts, and various other events.
