Corpus Christi is a large city on the Gulf Coast in Texas. It has more than enough beaches and attractions to be labeled a tourist attraction in its own right. But most people come here because it is the city nearest to the South Padre Island National Seashore. The Padre and Mustang Islands are close enough for their beaches to be part of a Corpus Christ beach tour. Tourists can visit a lot of museums and unique attractions, like the U.S.S. Lexington. You also have a unique opportunity to take daytrips to several big USA cities including Austin, Houston, and San Antonio. It will be awfully convenient to do all this if you get a car for hire in Corpus Christi.
You will have to start by getting a car for rent in Corpus Christi if you want to go beach hopping. The two city beaches are Corpus Christi Beach and McGee Beach. Outside the city, the two most popular island beaches are the Mustang Island State Park and the Padre Island beaches. You can reach the barrier islands within half an hour if you follow the TX-358 east past Oso Bay. There are seven other island beaches in close proximity, including J.P. Luby Surf Park, South Packery Jetty Beach, the beach at Bob Hall Pier, and Whitecap Beach.
Corpus Christi and the barrier islands are not just about beaches and surf. The Padre Island National Seashore includes 70 miles of unspoiled coastline with a prairie, shifting dunes and tidal flats that house the nesting grounds for endangered sea turtles. There are 380 different species of birds that are attracted to the Laguna Madre. The islands are used as a base by divers for exploring 1,554 shipwrecks offshore. Visitors have an array of recreational activities available, including camping on the beach, fishing and hunting, swimming, windsurfing and diving, and birding and boating.
Start at Corpus Christi Beach, where you will find the Texas State Aquarium and the U.S.S. Lexington. The WWII aircraft carrier is a now a giant museum for visitors and offers a flight simulator and a huge 3D theatre. The South Texas Botanical Gardens with 2,500 different types of orchids will be a pleasure to visit, and so will the creativity on display at the Art Museum of South Texas. The Museum of Science and History has the oldest shipwreck ever found in the Gulf, along with a full replica of La Pinta, one of the three ships used by Christopher Columbus.
Everything is super-sized in Texas, and the daytrip destinations are no different. Book your car rental in Corpus Christi and head for a daytrip or weekend road trip to three of the biggest cities in North America. Your choices include the state capital, Austin, along with Houston and San Antonio. San Antonio is less than 2 ½ hours away from Corpus Christi on the I-37 and I-35 north. Austin is another hour and 20 minutes from San Antonio, and you can cover the distance between Austin and Houston in 3 hours. Those who do not want to leave the coast can head north on TX-35 past Rockport and Port Lavaca to Galveston.
