Uruguay is a country in South America. It has a small South Atlantic coast squeezed in-between giant neighbors Brazil and Argentina. The climate is mostly mild and temperate, but the weather changes very quickly from day to day. Around 1.9 million of the country’s 3.3 million population live in the capital city of Montevideo and its metro area. Get a car for hire in Uruguay so that you can explore the capital, and visit other tourist hotspots, such as Colonia del Sacramento and Punta Del Este.
The City of Montevideo is located on the east bank of the Rio de la Plata, with a boatload of fascinating landmarks and monuments awaiting discovery by tourists. Get a car for rent in Uruguay and head for Plaza Independencia in the Ciudad Vieja. This is the Old City, where you can see historic attractions such as the Gateway of The Citadel, Palacio Salvo, Legislative Palace, Estévez Palace, and the Artigas Mausoleum. Do not miss a visit to Plaza de la Constitución to see the Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral.
A two and half hour drive on Route 1 along the coast from the capital will take you to Colonia, the oldest town in Uruguay. This is Colonia del Sacramento, right across the river from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Colonia has so many heritage colonial buildings in its Barrio Histórico that it was declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO. The historic quarter has 17th century cobblestone streets. Buy an entrance ticket at the Municipal Museum and use it to visit all seven museums. Must-visit attractions include the lighthouse and 17th century San Francisco Convent ruins. The 1808 Basilica del Sanctísimo Sacramento is a magnificent stone landmark. The Plaza de toros Real de San Carlos is an abandoned bullring just outside the city.
Punta del Este is a popular beach resort about two hours and 15 minutes’ drive along the coast from the capital. You can easily cover the distance on the four-lane toll highway connecting the two cities. The main beaches are La playa de los Dedos and Bikini Beach in La Barra. Apart from beaches and water sports, Punta del Este offers all kinds of urban entertainment. It is packed to the rafters with night clubs, bars, and casinos. Family attractions include the seal colony on Isla de los Lobos, the Pan de Azúcar reserve with a zoo up on a hill, and the Museo del Mar.
As mentioned above, you can reach Colonia in 2 ½ hours by car from Montevideo, and then to Buenos Aires in less than an hour by ferry. But where is the fun in that? If you are a road trip warrior, book your car rental in Uruguay right now and plan for an epic journey that follows the Rio de la Plata inland from Colonia to Paysandu and then to Salto. This is where you can hop across by road to Concordia in Argentina. Now you can follow the river back to the Atlantic Coast on the Argentinean side, from Concordia to Concepcion del Uruguay and then to Buenos Aires right across from Colonia.
