Kharkiv is the second largest city in Ukraine after Kiev. Kharkiv is not exactly what you would call a tourist paradise, but it is has an important place in history as the place where nuclear fission and the human immune system were discovered. It gets a lot of business travelers who visit the Malyshev Tank Factory and other large companies. As for sightseeing, every tour begins at Svobody, or Freedom, Square – one of the 10 biggest squares in Europe. Must-visit attractions in Kharkiv include the Shevchenko Monument and the Glory Memorial in the Forest park. The monument was built to commemorate the epic Soviet fight against Hitler's Nazi forces, which executed tens of thousands of people here. This is the sixth largest square in Europe. The biggest landmark on the square is the Derzhprom building, which was the first Soviet skyscraper. The Shevchenko Gardens date back to 1804. The Kharkiv National University building is also on the square, and so is the eight-floor building of the Hotel Kharkiv.

Kharkiv is just a short hop from the Russian border, but Moscow is still a good 10 hours away. It does make for a nice road trip, though. Stop along the way at Russian towns such as Belgorod, Livny, and Tula. Get a car for hire in Kharkiv and you can explore a big slice of Ukraine with a six hour drive to the capital Kiev. From Kiev, you can easily hop across the border into Belarus to cities like Mazyr. You may also plan for a trip to other Ukrainian cities like Donetsk,on the way to the Sea of Azov or across the border into Russia to Volvograd. Short drives or day trips from Kharkiv to Poltova and perhaps further ahead to Kremenchug are quite possible.
