A beautiful town in Hertfordshire, Hemel Hempstead is one of the ‘New Town’s that were reconstructed after the World War II. Today, it is densely populated, though the town organization aims at traffic and noise reduction. One sees a lot of modernist architecture here, which is a refreshing change from majority of the English countryside. Most people flock to the town to survey its sporting facilities and the radical manner in which its restoration was achieved in postwar times.
Hemel Hempstead has developed as a new-old town in the post-war era. While it retains much from its past – including a Church from the 12th century, and several Tudor and Georgian buildings, there is a modernist element in the construction and culture of the town. Also, with the cosmopolitan English capital London being just 24 miles away, urban influences flow in ceaselessly. Its most unique feature is the ‘Magic Roundabout’, which was built in 1973 to relieve traffic congestion. Many of those who rent a car in Hemel Hempstead are often intimidated by this seemingly complex system.
The town of Hemel Hempstead has excellent shopping facilities, more popular than those in proximal Berkhamsted and Tring. Its Marlowes Shopping Center is well-frequented, having over 75 big stores, as well as several other permanent and temporary retailers. Riverside is another popular shopping destination with an eclectic mix of high-end and budget goods. But most unique of all, is the high-street called ‘Old Town’ which has several antique and specialty shops that sell the most exclusive goods. Shopaholics can get a car for rent in Hemel Hempstead and spend all their time shopping.
Those who enjoy playing or watching sporting activities will enjoy Hemel Hempstead for its various facilities in that regard. It has some of the oldest sport clubs like Hemel Hempstead Town Football Club and Camelot Rugby Club. The Decorum Sports Trust has instituted a Sports Centre, Swimming Pool and Running Track, all of which have been in operation since 2004. The town also has its own Snow Center and two golfing greens, which further attract sports enthusiasts from near and afar. People from Watford, Chesham and Luton often come down and hire a car in Hemel Hempstead, just to enjoy the various sporting events and facilities available here.
Hemel Hempstead is blessed with natural beauty and rather peaceful surroundings, making it ideal for a restive, rejuvenating holiday. And if one has a car at hand, it’s all the better.
