Kampala city is located in the central part of Uganda in East Africa. The city grew when Kabaka Mutesa I established his home and government in the area in the 1800s. It is also famed as one of his favourite hunting spots due to the abundance of the impala. Kampala is a beautiful city surrounded by hills and wetlands. It has a tropical climate with wet and dry seasons. However, due to its high altitude, the temperatures never become as hot as the surrounding areas.
Kampala is served by Entebbe International Airport, located 45 km from the city. This is the biggest and busiest airport in Uganda. Getting from the airport can be a hassle since you have to through the town of Entebbe before finally arriving in Kampala. You can use a bus, a boda boda or a hired car. Buses and boda bodas can be risky for someone with luggage or someone not familiar with the area, so it’s a good idea to rent a car to take you into the city. You can also use Juba airport, but it is quite far from the city.
One of the most important cultural and historical places to visit is the Kasubi tombs. These tombs house the remains of past Buganda kings. Other places with cultural importance include the Uganda Museum, the Rubaga and Namirembe cathedrals, the Kibuli mosque, and the Bahai temple (one of the seven in the world). All these locations are in different locations. You have to rent a car in Kampala to easily get to them.
Kampala is a shopping hub for the whole of east Africa, so it’s great to visit the markets in the city. You will get to sample traditional art and crafts. The city is also home to the Nommo Art Gallery and the National Theatre. You can get in touch with your artistic side by viewing exhibitions at the gallery and performances at the theatre. You can also be part of different excursions around the city with a car for rent in Kampala.
The River Nile, the biggest river in Africa, starts in Jinja, a town a few kilometres from Kampala, and you will pass through Mukono and Lugazi as well. To get there, you go through a beautiful landscape of coffee, tea, and banana plantations. You will then arrive at the amazing Owen Falls, where you can absorb the beauty and enjoy a picnic of sumptuous African cuisine. Along the way you can stop at the Mabira Forest and look at various game animals. You can then head to Ngamba Island for chimpanzee tracking. You can also enjoy one of the many national parks in areas surrounding the city.
Even though the roads in the city are well maintained, the road network outside town is not so good. You need to consider this when you hire a car in Kampala. Make a reservation for a four-wheel drive vehicle, especially if you plan on going on a safari. All in all a visit to Kampala is the one of the most amazing trips ever!
