History of Djerba

The island was known as Meninx until the third century AD. The island was originally a port for the Phoenicians. Djerba was constantly being invaded and was ruled by many different powers throughout history. In 1284 Roger de Loria of Aragon dominated the island and built the Borj El Kebir at Houmt Souk.
