It became the capital after San Jose de Oruna was deserted by the Governor Don Pedro de la Moneda. The city went through a lot of reshaping in adjusting to the conditions of the island particularly the flooding in the rainy season. The island was invaded by the British forces in 1797 and on its capture, it became a British Colony. However the capital city retained its name while all the other streets and places where renamed. In the 19th century, the British reclaimed a lot of lands and the city grew in size. The city was used as the station for the US Forces during World War II. Then it became the capital of the West Indies Federation from 1958 to 1962 when the Federation collapsed.
