Togo is a country in West Africa. It shares the Gulf of Guinea coast with neighbors Benin and Ghana. On the landward side, it shares a small international border with Burkina Faso. The climate is warm and temperate throughout the year. The best time to visit is during the dry season from October through April. More than 837,000 of the country’s 6.14 million population live in the capital city of Lome. Get a car for hire in Togo so that you can explore the warm sandy beaches and tourist attractions in Lome. A rented car will also be useful for a drive to Kara, or for day trips to Lake Togo and nearby destinations such as Aneho.
Lome is the country’s capital, its largest city, and a sea port on the Gulf of Guinea. Lomé-Tokoin Airport located on the outskirts is the main gateway in and out of the country. Get a car for rent in Togo and head for the Palais de Congres, where you will find the Togo National Museum. Do not miss the Grand Market, Voodoo Market, and the Lome Cathedral. If you have time, check out the Eyadema stadium. Lome Beach, with its beachfront jukebox bars, and Coco Beach nearby, are tourist attractions worth visiting.
If you drive east from Lome along the coast on the N2, you will enjoy a nice and scenic drive, between the ocean and Lake Togo. A bit further past Lake Togo, you will reach Aneho. It is about 28 miles from the capital, and should not take more than 40 minutes. Aneho was the historic capital of Togo, but it is more of a fishing village now. Visitors will find it a relaxing getaway with a beach and colonial buildings.
You will have to drive some 250 miles across the entire country to get from Lome on the coast to Kara deep inland in the north. Is it worth the trouble? Well, it depends on what you like to do. If you are the outdoorsy type who enjoys an African safari, then it can be an interesting experience. You can visit Sarakawa Park and Keran National Park. A couple of hours from Kara, you will find the village of Nadoba, which has some old clay homes called Tatas. It is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
There are a lot more destinations and activities to enjoy in Togo. On the way to Kara, you could stop by at Atakpame and Sokode. The latter is a gateway into the Fazao-Malfakassa National Park. You can also continue past the Keran National Park to Mango. But the best trip would be a quick and easy getaway on Lake Togo.
