Chiangmai is a city in northern Thailand. It is considered as the largest and most culturally significant city in this part of the country. It used to be the capital of the old kingdom of Lanna, and is located among the highest mountains in the country. It is surrounded by Chiangrai, Phayao, Lampang, Lamphun and Mae Hong Son. It is only a few hours’ drive away from Bangkok, and most people come to Chiangmai to explore the culture of Thailand. It is also fast becoming a popular tourist destination.
If it is your first time to visit Thailand then you should definitely spend more than just a few days to explore a lot of places in this country. Thailand is a large country, and it is one of those countries that have a lot to offer. Bangkok is a great city, but you should go to Chiangmai if you want to see more. It is easy enough to go to Chiangmai, and there are a lot of traveler's inns and other houses where you can stay. Hire a car in Chiangmai and look for a cozy little house that you can call your home. Once you’ve found it, then it’s time to explore.
Most tourists enjoy the temples of Thailand, and if you enjoyed the temples in Bangkok, then you’d definitely find the temples in Chiangmai just as wonderful. Look for a car for hire in Chiangmai and go to all of these beautiful temples. There is Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, the city’s most popular temple, Wat Chiang Man, the oldest temple in the city, Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Chet Yot and Wat Umong which is located in the forest. With all these temples, you would definitely enjoy Chiangmai.
Aside from the temples, Chiang Mai is also popular for its festivals. Rent a car in Chiangmai and enjoy the festivals to get a feel of Thai culture. If you visit the city around November, you should watch out for the Loi Kratong, a festival celebrated in honor of the Goddess of Water. Many people bring their own Kratong, which is a floating banana leaf container with flowers, candles and other offerings. These are sent to float on the river with the belief that once these offerings reach the goddess, their prayers and wishes would come true. Another important Thai festival is the Songkran Festival, held in April to celebrate the Thai New Year. This festival makes Chiangmai very popular around this time. Brace yourself for a city-wide water fight and don’t be afraid to join in the fun.
With all its festivals, temples and other events, Chiangmai is a must-visit place in Thailand. Don’t miss out on the fun and make sure to drop by Chiangmai on your next vacation.
