Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa. It has a huge Indian Ocean coast that it shares with neighbors Kenya and Mozambique. Tanzania is locked in from the landward side by Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Congo (Democr. Republic), Zambia, and Malawi. The climate is tropical, and it is hot throughout the year. The wet season may be once or twice a year, depending on which part of the country you are in. Almost 2.5 million of the country’s 45 million population live in Dar Es Salaam. The capital of the country is Dodoma. Get a car for hire in Tanzania so that you can explore Dar es Salaam and Dodoma at your own pace, and plan trips to other popular destinations such as Arusha, the gateway city to the Serengeti National Park and Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Dar es Salaam is the country’s largest city and its cultural and commercial hub. Most visitors enter and leave the country through Dar’s Julius Nyerere International Airport, on their way to and from the game parks and beach resort hotspots such as Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia Island. While in Dar,get a car for rent in Tanzania and head for the National Museum and Makumbusho Village Museum. You might also want to schedule a day trip to the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve.
Dodoma is a long drive from the coast and Dar. You will need at least 6 to 7 hours if you drive nonstop. If you must stop, the best place is Morogoro, which is the gateway into Mikumi National Park and the Selous Game Reserve. Dodoma also has an airport with a daily flight to and from Dar. Being the official capital of the country, there are a few grand government buildings worth a look-see in the Bunge, such as the Parliament of Tanzania. You may also want to drive out to see the Hombolo Dam.
Arusha is famous for being the last outpost of modernity before you enter the real Africa that people come to see from across the oceans. Arusha has a pleasant and cool climate in the foothills of Mount Meru. Many visitors sidestep the coast and arrive directly at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in Arusha. You can also take a domestic or charter flight from Dar to Arusha Municipal Airport (ARK). Plan to visit Arusha National Park, Serengeti National Park, Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro Crater, and maybe a day trip to Lake Manyara.
If you visit Dar and Arusha and everything around the two cities, you will pretty much cover the top 10 tourist destinations in Tanzania, except Lake Victoria. To make sure you do not miss the lake or any of its attractions, book your car rental in Tanzania right now and plan the trip properly. While in Dar, remember to visit Bagamoyo on the way to the Zanzibar ferry. From Dodoma, you can take a day trip to Ruaha National Park near Iringa. Mwanza is the primary gateway for Lake Victoria eco tourism, recreation, and wildlife or birding safaris.
