Colombo refers to the largest city in Sri Lanka. It lies on the western coast of the island next to Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte. Colombo is regarded as the capital City of Sri Lanka and also has a satellite city named Jayawardenapaya Kotte. It also doubled as the political city of Sri Lanka before Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte. Some of the cities that lie in close proximity with the city of Colombo include Nagercoil, Tirunelveli, Thituvananthapuram, Madurai and Kollam.
There are a number of attractions in and around Colombo. One of these attractions is Adams Peak which refers to a legendary mountain peak that towers to over two thousand meters above sea level and is referred to as Sri Pada in the local tongue. It has been venerated as a place of worship and pilgrimage by many faiths for generations. It features a print which many faiths believe was left there by God Shiva, Adam following his expulsion from Eden, Buddha and St Thomas depending on their faith. The peak offers amazing panoramic views of the tropical forest. The winding stairway to the top of the peak is believed to be the longest in the world. The other notable attraction in Colombo is the Colombo Zoological Gardens. It features a number of reptiles, birds, fish and animals from all parts of the world with a special bias for the fauna from the island. The other attraction around Colombo is the Horton Plains National Park and World’s End. The park has some of the highest mountains in Sri Lanka. It is engulfed in hidden waterfalls, misty lakes and thick forests. The park is home to a number of animals like the wild boar, leopards, loris, macaques, otters and a wild variety of bird species. The jewel attraction of the park is World’s End which refers to a sheer precipice which drops from a height of eight hundred meters. To get to these attractions you need to hire a car in Colombo.
The Pettah refers to the shopping bazaar of Colombo. Shopaholics will fall in love with this place instantly.
