Rota is an ancient city and a beach resort with lovely beaches on Spain's Atlantic Coast in Andalusia. Rota is located about 25 miles from Cádiz and is even closer to Jerez de la Frontera. Visitors flying in will be arriving at Jerez. The attractions here are quite diverse, from the 4 beaches to the US Naval Base and medieval ramparts. You will have to rent a car in Rota, to see all this and the two national parks of Doñana and the Bay of Cádiz on either side.
You can start with the Palacio Municipal Castillo de Luna and the Cathedral Our Lady of Expectation. Enjoy the view from Mirador and check out the Farmer's Market in Plaza de Abastos. You might need to hire a car in Rota at this point, so it is better if you have booked it beforehand. If you have planned a trip but not booked a vehicle, then you should probably be booking it right now. You can visit the Astaroth marina and its fish market. In fact, the marina is a good place to get a taste of the local cuisine in one of the waterfront seafood restaurants. Urta a la roteña is a popular dish, which combines the fresh Cádiz fish and the countryside produce from the market. Wash it down with a glass of the local wine called La Tintilla de Rota.
There are four main beaches here, spread over 10 miles. You can, of course, get in your car and hit beaches all along the coast. But first, check out Punta Candor, Rompidillo, Playa de la Costilla and Playa de la Ballena. Punta Candor is a blue flag beach, and so is Playa de la Costilla.
Cadiz is obviously one of the most famous cities in southwestern Spain, located on a thin peninsula that juts into the bay and is completely surrounded by water. Like Rota, you will find Cadiz to be a mix of ancient monuments and four fine beaches. Tarifa is probably the best place in Europe for windsurfing and kite surfing. Apart from Rota and Tarifa, the one other place in Costa de la Luz you will surely be visiting is Jerez de la Frontera, and not just because of the airport.
There are two agencies at Jerez de la Frontera Airport (XRY) offering a car rental in Rota for travelers. There are a bucket load more in Jerez and then four more in Rota itself, of which three are located by the marina. Now it is not possible to go around after you arrive trying to find out which one is offering a good deal. The only way to do it is to compare them online right now, and book the best deal you can find.
