Oviedo refers to the city which also doubles up as the as the Principality of Asturias. The name also refers to the municipality that is home to the city of Oviedo. It lies about 20 miles from northern Spanish coast by the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains. Some of the cities near this amazing city include Gijon, Leon, Lugo, Ourense and La Coruna.
There are some amazing attractions in and around the city of Oviedo. The Basílica del Salvador refers to a thirteenth to fourteenth century Gothic cathedral that features a sixteenth century tower that stands at eighty two meters. The Sierra de Naranco in the nearby hill town of Naranco is home to two very unique and interesting historical churches. The city of Oviedo is also home to the old Covento de San Vicente which was established in the eighth century and rebuilt in the fifteenth century and which lies near the cathedral. Nearby is the Archaeological museum which has three floors. The ground floor is dedicated to pre-Romanesque and Romanesque art that has its roots in Asturias and includes the altar stone of Santa Maria de Naranco. The first floor is home to Roman coins, mosaics, sculptures as well as other relics that emanate from the Roman rule period in Iberia. The second floor is home to a wide collection of displays of Stone Age material from the Oviedo locality. To get to these attractions you need to hire a car in Oviedo.
The Bishop's Palace dates back to the sixteenth and eighteen centuries and is located on the southern side of the Oviedo Cathedral. The Casa de la Rúa is a fifteenth century building which holds the title of being the oldest secular building in the Oviedo. It adjoins to the Church of San Triso which dates back to the ninth century and which was restored to its original glory in the eighteenth century. The Convento de San Pelayo dates back to the eleventh to eighteenth centuries and lies on the northern side of the Oviedo cathedral. The Museum of Fine Art is housed in the Baroque Palacio de Velarde and is home to the Provincial Museum of Art which features a collection of works which includes among other things a vast collection of works that dates back to the Renaissance and Baroque periods including pictures by modern and contemporary Asturian painters. The Palacio de Valdecarzana dates back to the seventeenth century. To get to these attractions you need car rental in Oviedo.
There are a number of other attractions in Oviedo including Parque de San Francisco, Plaza Daoiz y Velarde, Plaza Mayor, Plaza Porlier, Plaza de Alfonso, Cueva de Candamo, Santa María la Real, San Julián de los Prados, among others.
