Murcia refers to a city which also doubles up as the capital of the Autonomous community of the Murcia Region. It is the most populous city in this region and the seventh largest country wide. It lies on the banks of the Segura River. Some of the cities that lie in close proximity with this city include the cities of Cartagena, Elx, Alacant, Albacete and Almeria.
There are numerous attractions in the city of Murcia. The Cathedral de Santa María is one such attraction which dates back to the fourteenth century and which features a ninety-two meter high tower that offers unadulterated views of the city below. The other attraction is the Holy Week or Semana Santa which is observed by very elaborate nocturnal processions which involve the carrying of pasos by Francisco Salzillo around town. The processions culminate with a striking procession on the morning of Good Friday. The Salzillo Museum is the other attraction that showcases the works of the renowned sculptor by the same name. There are a number of attractions that lie on banks of the Rio Segura including the Glorieta de España which refers to a beautiful public garden that is home to the Ayunatmiento or Town Hall. The Archeological Museum or Museo de Arqueología is located in the Casa de Cultura and showcases a wide range of prehistoric, Greek and Roman antiquities as well as a collection of pottery and specifically Moorish ware. The Calle de la Trapería leads to the old town and in conjunction with the Calle de la Platería, Lead to the heartland of the pedestrian zone which is a beehive of activity that offers an ideal shopping spot for visitors and locals alike. There are also a number of churches in Murcia including San Nicolás which features a sculpture from the sculpturist Alonso Canao as well as an elaborate interior décor. The other churches include the Salzillo and Pedro de Mena as well as the San Miguel which lie in close proximity with the Jardin de San Esteban known to showcase a number of figures by the altar attributed to Salzillo.
