Tenerife is the largest of the seven Canary Islands - Teneriffe in Spain. The magnificent beaches, a happy holiday vibe and a sizzling nightlife have made it a world class holiday destination. The number of visitors has grown so fast that they had to open a second airport in the southern and tourist-friendly part of the island. The newer Granadilla Airport (TFS) now gets more passengers because it is so convenient. If you are a foreign visitor arriving in Tenerife, it's more than likely that you will land here and need to get a car for hire in Granadilla Airport.
Most visitors landing in Tenerife South head straight for the beach resorts in Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas. A weekend is hardly enough to see all the attractions on the island. The only way you are going to be able to see the island properly is if you get a car for hire in Granadilla when you arrive. Do not miss the Parque Nacional del Teide, Costa Adeje, San Miguel de Abona and a visit to Masca. Las Galletas and Puerto de la Cruz have plenty of dive spots for scuba divers and Puerto de la Cruz has a famous zoo to boot. La Orotava and La Laguna are historic towns, and you will surely not want to miss the capital city of Santa Cruz.
Playa las Vista and Playa Los Cristianos are the two main beaches in Los Cristianos and arguably the best in south Tenerife. Then you have Playa Fañabe and Playa la Pinta in Costa Adeje, and Playa del Camison in Las Americas. Because Tenerife has a volcanic past, visitors can enjoy both black sand beaches and the traditional golden sand beaches. The black beauties are Playa de la Arena near Los Gigantes, Playa Jardin and Playa Socorro in Puerto de la Cruz, and Playa San Marcos down below Icod de los Vinos. Perhaps the best golden sand beach on the island is Playa de las Teresitas near Santa Cruz. El Medano, which literally means sand dune, has another couple of interesting beaches.
If you want to see Tenerife properly, the best thing you can do is get in your car and hit TF-1. The Autopista del Sur or South Highway will take you along the coast all the way from Los Cristianos and the Granadilla Airport (TFS) to Santa Cruz. You can take the TF-5 if you want to go round and follow the north coast to Puerto de la Cruz. From here, you can head inland on the TF-21 through the Parque Nacional del Teide and past Vilaflor right back to the airport. It's a great way to see the island and get to know it properly, if you have the time to explore and drive.
It is ridiculously easy to hire a car in Granadilla Airport, where there are at least six major car hire agencies with depots, and many more have counters and offices at the arrivals terminal and just outside on Av Aeropuerto Reina Sofia. The only way for you to know which one is offering the best deal is to check and compare them online. Select the best deal and book your car right now so that it will be waiting and ready when you arrive in Tenerife.
