Koper is a port city in Slovenia, and its only one at that. Slovenia has a small coastline near the Italian border, and Koper has been guarding this area’s access to and from the Adriatic since the Roman era. Koper has a mind-boggling collection of Romanesque architecture from as far back as the 11th century. Layered on top of this is the Venetian architecture in the old city. You will not find any Mediterranean beaches in Koper, but you will enjoy the outdoors with scenic sights such as the Dragonja River Valley. Not to mention natural wonders such as “the ears of Istria” and Osp’s cave. Get a car for hire in Koper so that you can explore the city and its surroundings at your leisure.
The best place to start is the Praetorian Palace at Tito trg (Tito Square). For starters, Tito trg is itself a tourist attraction, and the 15th century Praetorian Palace is the star of the show as the only renovated structure. It functions as the city hall, and also has the tourist information office. Other historic attractions at Tito trg include the Cathedral of the Assumption, Taverna Koper, and the Campanile. Get a car for rent in Koper, so that you can continue the tour to Brolo Square, where you will find the Fontico from 1392. Other historic attractions that will take you back in time include Muda Gate from 1516, St. Martha's Church and Monastery from 1621, and St. Bass' Church from the 16th century.
The Dragonja River Valley is a picturesque place filled with waterfalls and rolling green hills dotted with vineyards and olive groves. A few old mills such as the Kodarinov Mill still stand on the riverbanks. You must visit Osp’s cave and the rock stone near the village of Osp. You might also want to take a look at the Posidonia meadow and climb up to the hill called Slavnik. A waterfall near Trebese village is the biggest one in Slovenian Istria.
The most popular hotels in Koper are the Vodisek Hotel and Aquapark Zusterna Hotel. The Vodisek Hotel is located at Kolodvorska cesta 2. Aquapark Zusterna can be found at Istrska cesta 67. If you want a hotel that doubles as a tourist attraction, head for the Hotel Koper at Pristaniska 3. It is the only hotel inside the old city, and has a nice view of the marina. Hotel Koper also has a trattoria where you can enjoy the food and the view from the terrace.
You can drive the half hour it takes to get to Piran, assuming you do not stop along the way at Izola. A drive across the border to Trieste in Italy has much more appeal. Book your car rental in Koper right now so that you have time to stop along the way at Ankaran in Slovenia. Another stop is Muggia just across the border in Italy.
