Qatar is a country in the Middle East that occupies a peninsula jutting out of the land mass of Saudi Arabia into the Persian Gulf. Qatar's ideal location between Bahrain and Abu Dhabi makes it a part of all the popular tourist itineraries. Qatar's local populace of about 300,000 is divided into seven municipalities. The climate is mild in winter, but the temperature hits the top of the charts during summer. The inland area is mostly flat and arid desert covered by sand. The 350 mile coast is much more hospitable, and includes the capital city of Doha and nearby municipalities and cities such as Al Wakrah and Umm Sa'id. Get a car for hire in Qatar and you can follow the coast from Doha to Al Wakrah, Umm Sa'id, and onwards to spectacular natural wonders such as Khor Al-Adaid (Inland Sea).
The capital city of Doha has many faces, and you get to choose which one you want to see. Get a car for rent in Qatar and take a tour of a bucket load of museums, including the Sheikh Faisal Collection and the Weaponry Museum. You could just as well get a cultural immersion tour with a visit to the Souq Waqif. Be careful about what you buy in the market, because you could easily end up coming out with anything from a falcon to a bagful of spices. Landmarks worth a visit include the Al Koot and Al Zubara forts and the Clock Tower. The touristy attractions include the Doha Zoo and Jungle Zone at the Hyatt Plaza. You can also poke around on the promenade and beaches such as Westbay Beach and Katara Beach.
Al Wakrah is 10 miles south of Doha along the same coast. The main tourist attraction here is the Al Wakrah Museum offering marine life and natural history displays. There is a nice curving beach which has historic landmarks such as the house of Sheikh Ghanim Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani. In the city, you may visit historic attractions such as the Al Wakrah Grand Mosque and Al Wakrah Fort.
Continue further south some 20 odd miles past Al Wakrah and you reach Umm Sa'id, or Mesaieed. The city is an industrial hub, but the beach and resort south of the city are genuine enough. It is burning hot in the summer, but otherwise you will enjoy a stay here with ATV rides on the sand dunes and the exclusive clubs offering golf courses, pools and all kinds of facilities.
Assuming you plan to land at Doha Airport, you can book your car rental in Qatar right now and plan for a coastal drive from Doha. If you go south, stop at Al Wakrah and Umm Sa'id along the way, and then your next stop will be at the Inland Sea, or Khor Al-Adaid. The Inland Sea is only about 50 miles from Doha, but it is a world apart with a shallow tidal lake surrounded by sand dunes in a crescent shape. The lake is fed by a narrow inlet which runs a long way inland from the Persian Gulf. Alternatively, you could cut across the peninsula from Doha to Dukhan or head north along the coast towards Fuwairit and Al Ghariya.
