Lima is a massive metropolis and the capital of Peru. With almost 9 million people, Lima is now Latin America's fifth largest city. Very rarely does a city have the geographic diversity to include ocean side attractions and a river valley surrounded by a desert. But Lima does have all this, and this is part of what makes it the "City of Kings." These days, it is the visitors who are treated as royalty and fed with ceviche and other Peruvian dishes in luxury hotels. The historic buildings on Plaza de Armas compete for attention with seaside shopping malls. There are a dozen different beaches that visitors will not want to leave behind for excursions to famous archeological sites like Machu Picchu. You will have to rent a car in Lima to see the sights in such a big city with a huge metropolitan area and even more attractions further beyond.
Most tours in Lima begin in the Plaza de Armas. The Government Palace dominates the landscape, but the Cathedral that was rebuilt in 1758 is just as impressive. Another must-visit attraction is the Spanish Inquisition Museum in Plaza Bolivar. Get a car for hire in Lima and you will enjoy visits to the Museo de Oro or Gold Museum with its priceless hoard of ancient gold. History apart, you must try the cuisine and do not miss the ceviche. There are many restaurants and cafes at the Pasaje Nicolas de Ribera el Viejo near Plaza de Armas. You must also do some seaside shopping in Miraflores or San Isidro. One such attraction is the Larco Mar, an ocean front supermall with its own multiplex, bowling alley, discos and restaurants and other entertainment options.
Lima offers a diverse selection of beaches on its Pacific Ocean coast for visitors and residents. Villa and San Pedro are what one might call untamed beaches with rough waters and big waves. But the three famed surfing beaches are El Silencio, Caballeros and Señoritas. Those who seek a little bit less adventure may enjoy the beach resorts at Punta Hermosa, Punta Negra and San Bartolome. The yachts and private charters will prefer Santa Maria with its calm waters and a beautiful bay. Both Naplo and Pucusana also offer calm waters and small bay islands that are perfect for fishing.
Among the most famous attractions here are the Nacza Lines, with art-works strewn on the desert between Nacza and Palpa. A trip to Cusco and the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu offer a look at what is arguably the most famous archeological site in the world. A trip to Iquitos and the Andes Mountains and the Amazon Jungle will be a thrilling adventure.
There are two agencies at the Lima Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM) in Callao offering a car rental in Lima for travelers. There are many more spread out in the city, from the city center to the Miraflores District and Costa Verde. It would be almost impossible to find the best deal offline or in person, so it is best to compare all the agencies online. Select a deal you like and book your vehicle right now, so that it will be available and ready when you arrive in Lima.
