Papua New Guinea (PNG) is located on the eastern part of the Island of Guinea. It also includes some 600 smaller islands about 100 miles from Australia’s Queensland coast. The western part of the Island of Guinea is a territory that belongs to Indonesia. The climate is mostly tropical with two wet seasons. Around 308,000 of the country’s 6.3 million population live in Port Moresby, which is the country’s capital. Get a car for hire in Papua New Guinea so that you can explore Port Moresby. You may also want to plan for trips to other destinations on Guinea such as Lae and Alotau.
Port Moresby is a city of contrasts, where shantytown huts jostle for space with modern glass towers reaching into the sky. The waterfront beauty and ocean breeze at Fairfax Harbor soon gives way to the dust and emptiness of the NCD interiors. Get a car for rent in Papua New Guinea and head for Parliament House and the National Museum and Art Gallery on Independence Hill. Gordon’s Market is one of the biggest markets in the country. If you want to try seafood, head for the Koki Market on the waterfront. Other places worth a look-see include the National Botanical Gardens, Bomana War Cemetery, and the National Library at the University of Papua New Guinea. Beaches are mostly private, so be ready to pay for access to each one.
The port city of Lae on the north coast is the main gateway in and out of the country for visitors who intend to explore the PNG Highlands region. You can head out on the Highlands Highway from Lae all the way to Mt. Hagen and Mendi. A coastal drive on the north coast will take you to Madang. Lae itself is a big city with plenty of tourist attractions and activities. You can go deep sea sport fishing, or take a city tour that includes the Lae Botanic Gardens and the Rainforest Habitat at the Lae University of Technology.
Alotau is an isolated community at the edge of beautiful Milne Bay at the eastern end of Guinea. Alotau has some spectacular dive spots with extensive WW II shipwrecks that attract divers from all over the world. It is also the main gateway for visitors looking to explore the rest of the small islands strewn in the South Pacific waters near Guinea. Fergusson Island is a volcanic wonderland with hot springs, geysers, and bubbling pools of mud. Misima Island is famous as a focal point of the gold rush era, and Woodlark Island is popular for traditional wooden carvings made by the locals.
The thing about PNG is that it is not a connected country which you can cover in one big road trip. You have to break up your exploring into at least three sections, using Port Moresby, Lae, and Alotau as a base for each section. Book your car rental in Papua New Guinea right now and plan for road trips to explore the National Capital District, the Highlands, north coast near Lae, and Milne Bay destinations near Alotau such as Toulie.
