Lahore is the capital of Punjab province and the second biggest city in Pakistan. With a history and civilization that dates back thousands of years, the inner walled city of Lahore offers historic attractions and an authentic view into the ancient culture and fascinating mix of the Mughal and Sikh influences. The Lahore Fort is the star of the show, listed as a UNESCO World heritage site. The many ancient gates are the supporting cast. The mosques are exquisite and the Museum of Cricket is but one of many interesting museums. Lahore is also an important gateway into the province. Many visitors land here, get a car for hire in Lahore Airport and head off to other nearby destinations like Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala, Sialkot and Rawalpindi.
Lahore is not a place where you can see everything on foot. The first thing you need to do is get a car for hire in Lahore. Even then, you will still not be able to see everything in such a big city so you must stick to the main attractions. This means the Lahore Fort and the inner city, to start with. Do not miss the Badshahi Mosque which was at one time the biggest mosque in the world. The old city was surrounded by a wall and had 13 gates, some of which are still intact. You might also want to visit the Lahore Zoo, Shalimar Gardens, the University of Punjab and the Wagah Border gate with India.
More than anything else, Lahore is known for its love for food. With a mix of Mughal and Sikh cultures and thousands of years of experimentation with various cuisines and dishes, the food here is more of an art form and well worth the trip. There are special food streets which are filled with all kinds of food shops. Try the Shahi Mohalla near the Raushnai Gate, and the Gawal Mandi or Old Anarkali food streets.
Lahore Allama Iqbal International Airport (LHE) is located in the cantonment area, about 9.3 miles from the city center. The airport actually has three terminals, but only one is available for international and domestic passengers. Another one is for cargo and a third terminal is the Hajj Terminal, used only by Pakistan International Airlines when the one active terminal is strained by the rush of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. The arrivals hall is on level 1. The normal yellow cabs and the special air-conditioned cabs for the airport are located just outside the terminal in a 24 hour taxi stand.
There is one agency that can provide vehicles to passengers who need to rent a car in Lahore Airport. There are at least eight other agencies nearby, in between the Allama Iqbal International Airport and the Walton Airport. You can compare all these agencies online, find the best deal on offer and book your vehicle right now.
