If you are on a short vacation or just passing through, there is simply no way for you to see everything of interest in Oslo. The best you can do is stick to the top five or ten attractions. Get a car for rent in Oslo and head for the Viking Ship Museum. They have two very old Viking ships which are more than a thousand years old. You might also want to see Fram, the wooden polar ship. Another must-visit attraction is the Natural History Museum, which is actually a set of museums and a botanical garden. Throw in the Vigeland Sculpture Park and the Holmenkollen Ski Museum and Tower to complete the top five attractions tour. If you still have time, check out the Nobel Peace Center, National Gallery, and the 1299 Akershus Fortress on Oslo Fjord.
You will need a public transport ticket or an Oslo Pass to hop on and off the ferries as you go island hopping in Oslo Fjord. The nearest island from the city center is Hovedøya Island, a beautiful place with beaches and forests. Another choice is the trio of Gressholmen, Heggholmen, and Rambergøya islands. These are connected islands, popular for swimming and bird watching. Langøyene has a nudist beach, and the Bygdoy peninsula also has beaches, museums, and lots of other attractions.
Oslo is famed as the shopping capital of Scandinavia. The best place in Oslo for shopping is Karl Johans Gate, a popular street filled lined with all kinds of shops and malls. Byporten Shopping, close to Oslo Central Station, has more than 70 retail outlets. Two other choices here include the Oslo City Shopping Center and the Paleet Shopping Center.
Nordstrand and Sandvika are two of the nearest destinations you can drive over to from Oslo. But you could easily widen your horizons to look beyond Oslo Fjord to destinations along the Skagerrak, which is the strait dividing Norway and Sweden all the way to the Baltic Sea. Book your car rental in Oslo right now and plan a drive that takes you from Oslo to Drammen and then to Tønsberg. You could drive past Tonsberg and continue all the way to kristiansand. Alternatively, you could make it a drive from Oslo to Moss, and then to Fredrikstad on the other side of the strait. Fredrikstad is pretty much the end of the line, after which you would be entering Sweden.
