Aalesund (Alesund) is a city in Norway’s Møre og Romsdal County. Tourists will find this place to be a multi-faceted destination, with something in it for everyone. Geirangerfjord is a fjord so beautiful and pristine that UNESCO added it to their world heritage list to protect it. The Sunnmore Alps are a winter wonderland for mountain and cross-country skiing. Alesund is also Norway’s fishing capital, with innumerable fishing spots on the Atlantic coast, in the fjords, rivers, and all the lakes. The whole city is one big architectural tour because all the homes were rebuilt as art nouveau structures after a terrible fire in 1904. Get a car for hire in Aalesund so that you can visit the fjords and ski areas, and explore the city at your own pace.
The city of Alesund literally rose from its own ashes, after the terrible fire of Jan 23rd, 1904. By 1907, the entire city was rebuilt in the art nouveau style and now, it is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Norway. Get a car for rent in Aalesund and head for the Art Nouveau Center (Jugendstilsenteret), which will take you back in time to the day of the fire. Drive around to see 400 art nouveau buildings in daily use, complete with towers, spires, and ornamental decorations.
Geirangerfjord is a 10-mile fjord located close to the village of Geiranger, about 62 miles from Alesund. You can start with the Geiranger Fjord Center, and visit some of the famed waterfalls including Brudesløret and De Syv Søstrene. You can take a fjord cruise or hike up to the Ørnevegen (Eagle Road) for a sweeping view of the whole area. Two other observation spots are Dalsnibba and Flydalsjuvet. You can drive a couple of miles from the village to the Westerås Farm, and from there to the Storseterfossen Waterfall.
This is not really a huge Swiss Alps style ski resort, although it has 60 slopes and many terrain parks. Most of the time, you will be all by yourself with no one in sight. Take the ski lifts up to the slopes or to the tracks for cross-country skiing. You can even ski in Geirangerfjord, sliding from the mountain slopes down to the fjord. The main ski area is the Sunnmørsalpane Skiarena Fjellseter. Another choice is the Stordal Alpine Center in Overøye/Langsæter. It is ideal for families and first-time skiers, with flat terrain that is easy for cross-country skiing. If you get an Alpepass ski card, you can explore nine ski resorts in the area.
The nearest destinations that you can visit are Hareid, Nordstrand, and Spjelkavik. But the real fun would be a coastal drive to Trondheim or Bergen. Book your car rental in Aalesund right now, and plan a five-hour drive to Trondheim, not counting for stops along the way at Molde and Kristiansund.
