Wanganui (Whanganui) is located in the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the west coast of North Island, New Zealand. The city is situated due west of Palmerston North, and is within easy driving distance of Wellington. Visitors will find a dazzling array of outdoor experiences and recreation in the Wanganui National Park, owing to the Wanganui River and its 239 rapids. These natural wonders and the unique cultural attractions here, show the region’s mix of Maori and European history. Get a car for hire in Wanganui, to explore everything from Main St. to Opera House, and the Bridge to Nowhere. It will also come in handy if you have time to explore other towns and cities in the region.
It would be nice to explore the whole city at your leisure, but many visitors are often pressed for time. If you are one of them, you can simply get a car for rent in Wanganui and zip around quickly to see the top five attractions. This means the Sarjeant Gallery, Wanganui Regional Museum, and the Tramshed. The Wanganui Glass School is a fascinating attraction not to be missed, and so is a visit to the Durie Hill pedestrian tunnel which leads to the historic underground elevator.
The most popular place for visitors is Wanganui’s Main St. where you can do some shopping to take back fond memories of your visit down under. The River Traders Market on the river bank is a good place for some seriously exotic food shopping. Go to the Wanganui Riverboat Center and Museum for a ride on the paddleboat steamer, PS Waimarie. The Royal Wanganui Opera House doubles as an architectural attraction and a place for events and shows. The Wanganui River Road to Pipriki follows the river and offers breathtaking landscape all the way, along with historic landmarks and remnants of early European settlements. It also leads to the majestic but rather tragic “Bridge to Nowhere.” This bridge was constructed across the Mangapurua Gorge to a settlement which has been abandoned, leaving behind the bridge which now leads to nowhere.
One of the top choices for hotels in Wanganui is “Kingsgate Hotel The Avenue Wanganui,” which is located at 379 Victoria Ave. The Quality Inn Collegiate at 122 Liverpool Street is a good choice too, and so is the 151 on London Hotel, which is located at 151 London Street, College Estate.
If you took the Wanganui River Road drive to Pipriki, you have already done a little bit of exploring in the Manawatu-Wanganui region. You can do a lot more if you have the time. Book your car rental in Wanganui right now and plan your trip so that you have time for a day trip to Taihape, which is New Zealand’s gumboot capital. You may also want to take a coastal drive to Wellington, with stops along the way at Palmerston North, Levin, Otaki, and perhaps Porirua.
