Mozambique is a country in Southern Africa, with a huge coast facing the Indian Ocean. Its coastal neighbors are Tanzania and South Africa, with tiny Swaziland squeezed in between Mozambique and South Africa. On the landward side, Mozambique is locked in by Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi. The climate is tropical, with an annual rainy season from October to March. Around 1.25 million of the country’s 24 million population reside in the capital city of Maputo. Get a car for hire in Mozambique so that you can explore Maputo, and visit other coastal resorts and destinations such as Beira and Vilanculos.
Despite having architectural gems and beautiful beaches, Maputo is not really a big tourist destination. It is still the country’s capital and gets a lot of visitors entering and leaving for different reasons. As a tourist, you can start with the magnificent and grandiose Central Railway Station, an epic throwback to Maputo’s colonial past. Get a car for rent in Mozambique and head for the Municipal Palace. The Natural History Museum shows a different style of architecture, as does the famed arch at Tunduru Garden. Other must-visit landmarks include the Maputo Cathedral, the Fortress of Maputo, and the Mozambique National Library. The best beaches are Ponta d'Ouro, Ponta Malongane, and maybe also Catembe. The Limpopo National Park is quite close, if you are interested in an African safari.
Vilanculos is a huge destination for all kinds of water sports fans and fanatics. You can do everything from full day horse rides on isolated white sand beaches to deep sea sport fishing. The Bazaruto Archipelago has some great dive spots with clear waters, coral reefs, and a plethora of colorful marine life forms that attract divers from all over the world. The islands in the archipelago offer a number of superb white sand beaches that are all virtually isolated and are never crowded.
Beira is the second largest city in Mozambique, located far away from the capital. This is again a seaside tourist destination with nearby beaches such as Savanna Beach as the main draw. Another huge attraction is the Gorongosa National Park.
Assuming you have already covered the coast from Maputo to Xai-Xai, Vilanculos and Beira, that is still only about half of the coast. Book your car rental in Mozambique and plan for a road trip from Beira to Pemba. Your stops along the way will include Quelimane, Nampula (inland), and then Nacala.
