Skopje refers to the biggest as well as the capital city of the Republic of Macedonia. It also doubles up as the academic, political, economic and cultural centre of Macedonia. Its name is derived from the Roman times when the city used to be known as Scupi. Some of the cities that lie in close proximity with the city of Skopje include Pristina, Tirana, Sofia, Thessaloniki and Plovdiv.
There are a number of attractions in and around Skopje. One such attraction is the Lake Doirani which features among other things sandy beaches that are lined with hamlets. The lake is located in Doirari village and has spectacular scenery as well as it famous lakeside restaurants. The other attraction is the picturesque Goumenissa which is constructed on the slopes of the Mount Paiko. It is known for its quaint, narrow alleyways as well as enchanting ancient houses. In close proximity to the Goumenissa is the Europos which refers to a village and archaeological site. Its finds of ancient kouros is one of the most comprehensive and important finds and which are displayed in the archaeological museum. To get to these attractions, you need to hire a car in Skopje.
The nearby town of Grevana is the other attraction which dates to the year 543 and lies on the banks of the Grevenitis River, which is a tributary of the Aliakmon. It is home to numerous tavernas, restaurants and an open air theatre which form some of its attractions. Kassandra is the other attraction around Skopje. It features long stretches on pine forests and beaches which are characterized by tiny beautiful villages. The village is home to one of the best preserved windmills in the locality. There are a number of attractions in and around Skopje. One of these attractions is the Petralona Cave which lies on the foothills of Mount Katsika near the village of Petralona. The caves run a length of 1.5 kilometers and cover a total are of 1.4 square kilometres. It is one of the most important paleontological caves which has yielded numerous paleontological finds. Among its notable finds are the remains of a human skull of the Neanderthal type which dates some 200,000 to 260,000 years ago. Also found here are the skulls of cave bears, hyenas, foxes, panthers, stags, wolves and Pleistocene period horses. In total, close the 34 species of fauna have been found in this cave and have been taken to the University of Salonica to be studied at the Paleontology laboratory. There are a number of other attractions than can be found in and around Skopje and which are a must visit for anyone touring the town of Skopje. While they all cannot be covered in one day, getting a car rental would go a long way in helping one achieve this goal.
