Vientiane, the largest city in Laos, is also the capital. Situated on the Mekong River bordering the Nongkhai district of Thailand, Vientiane is one of the best places to spend some time away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of South East Asia.
If you are wondering about transportation, then one of the best ways to get around is to rent a car in Vientiane. Drive through the beautiful tree-lined streets while admiring landmarks like the Beerlao brewery, the scenic Mekong River, and more. The best time to travel to Vientiane is from November to February, after which summer sets in and the humidity levels can get quite high. Being a fairly small city, you can take a car for rent in Vientiane and drive to the nearby cities. Pakxan, Ban Phue, Muang Vangviang, Ban Phonsavan, Akat Amnuai are all within a distance of 150 miles of Vientiane.
The first place that you should go in Vientiane is the golden stupa of That Luang. It is an important structure in Lao culture and is believed to contain Buddha's breast bone. Entry to That Luang is from 8 am to 4 pm, but it is closed on public holidays and Mondays. Another interesting place to visit is the Ho Pra Keo museum. This museum was actually an ancient temple which was later converted into a museum of Buddhist sculptures. If you are willing to explore more, then do visit the Wat Sisaket Temple as well. It is known to house around 6840 images of Buddha and is open daily. Among the building and streets inspired by the French inside Vientiane is the Patuxay Monument. Some might even say it is a Lao replica of Paris' Arc du Triomphe. You can stand atop this magnificent structure and take in the stunning panoramic view of the entire city, which is a sight to behold. Further south towards the Mekong, is the Buddha Park, filled with many Hindu and Buddhist sculptures. After visiting these wonderful sights, you can hire a car in Vientiane and head north 25 kilometres to the quaint Hinkhanna Waterfall. You will feel your stress vanishes as you listen to the serene sounds of nature at this relaxing place.
To truly enjoy any city during a vacation, there are two things that you must do. First is to drive around to take a closer look at the local scene, and the second one is to taste local foods. Luckily, there is a Vientiane City cuisine tour that will teach you about Lao cuisine in about half a day. Starting at the local ingredients market , you will learn to cook authentic sticky rice and other delicacies while meeting some friendly locals.
So if you are planning a South East Asian vacation, then make sure to spend some time in Vientiane and other parts of Laos. Cities like Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang are other major tourist spots in Laos that are definitely worth spending some time in.
