Yamaguchi is the capital city of this entire prefecture. It has a land area of 613 square miles of developed land, located at the Chugoku region of the famous Honshu Island. With almost 1.5 million residents,it is considered a densely populated city with over 2,300 residents per square mile. The infrastructure is modern and adequately maintained. Standard of living is high, although much of the population still inhabit the city.
The main entry point into Yamaguchi is at the prefecture’s largest airport, the Yamaguchi Ube Airport. This is a domestic airport that is directly linked to Tokyo’s Haneda International Airport. Yamaguchi and most of the neighbouring areas are networked mainly by the Sanyo Expressway and the Chugoku Expressway. The latter takes an east-west direction, passing through the neighbouring Hagi at the northwest, via Yamaguchi and across to Hōfu at the east. The Sanyo Expressway is one of the best routes to use especially when you hire a car in Yamaguchi. It is more orderly, and moreover, it connects Yamaguchi to Mine City at the immediate west and Sanyoonoda, lying in the northwest.
One tourist site which is accessible in a car for rent in Yamaguchi, is the Kikkou Park. Here you find the Kintai Bridge, a 175 metre long historic bridge in Iwakuni town. This wooden bridge consists of five, 5 metre wide arches that pass through the Nishiki River, right at the bottom of Yokoyama Mountain. Still at Kikkou, is a 17th century castle known as the Iwakuni Castle. This is located at the top of Mount Yokoyama. Another popular resort is the Akiyoshidai Quasi National Park. This is a 45 square kilometre park established in the early 20th century. It is home to over 400 caves in a limestone environment, a wetland, a ramsar site, and a ground water system.
