Fukuoka is Japan’s 7th largest city, with a high population surpassing even Kyoto. The city has a rich and interesting history. It was formed from two towns: Hakata-Hu and Fukuoka. On the day the name of the new city was to be decided, a group of Samurai stormed the meeting and forced everyone to vote for the name Fukuoka. The city was also named one of the most livable cities in the world, due to its green areas in the metropolitan area. Even with such an interesting past, this city is ultra-modern.
Fukuoka’s ultra-modern facilities are easily accessible with a car. The features include cinemas, theatres, shopping malls, and stunning architecture. A good example of the stunning architecture is the ACROS Fukuoka building. Many people visit the building just to have a glimpse of its unique, magnificent design. It consists of all modern amenities and is excellent to visit for a meal. The canal city, Hakata, the first of its kind in Japan, is a city within a city. It has an amusement park, a 13- screen movie theatre, hotels, and stores within its walls.
Fukuoka is surrounded by scenic natural beauty, including seas, mountains, hot springs, and parks. Fukuoka is thus ideal for surfing, sun bathing and other water sports. Uminonakamichi Marine Park has been built on a narrow cape. This park has an amusement park, petting zoo, marine aquarium, gardens, and hotels. This makes it ideal for a family day out. Fukuoka is also suitable for mountain hiking and skiing. The scenic mountain areas also hold some of the best golf courses.
Even though Fukuoka is a modern city, it still boosts some historical and cultural sites. Fukuoka Castle is one such famous site. Another important site is the Kushida shrine. This shrine is shaded by a 1000 year old gingko tree. It is also home to the Hakata Historical Museum. The most interesting thing is that most of the places can be accessed with a car for rent in Fukuoka.
There are other sights in the surrounding cities and towns with sites that shouldn’t be missed. The Kumamoto-Jo castle in Kumamoto is one of the most magnificent castles in the country. The city also boosts great temples such as Honmyo-ji temple of Kiyomasa. The hot springs of Fatsukaichi are very impressive. The public hot baths will make anyone dream of the town again. Kurume has the most colourful died textiles, pieces made from bamboo, pottery, and the famous Jika-tabi. It is also home to Narita-san temple with the enormous ‘goddess of mercy’.
The nearest airports to Fukuoka are hundreds of kilometres away. These include the Haneda in Tokyo and Itami in Osaka. It is thus wise to hire a car in Fukuoka. This will make it easy to move around during your holiday there.
