Abidjan is the former capital of the Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire) in West Africa. The city, once a beacon of hope in Africa, has lost a considerable amount of sheen after being ravaged by civil war. But it is still the only oasis of modernity on the West African coast, with no other major city for thousands of miles. Visitors will find an array of historic and cultural attractions, topped off with shopping markets. The restaurants serve wonderfully exotic cuisine. Get a car for hire in Abidjan and get to know the city like an Ivorian.
St. Paul Cathedral and the Cité Administrative Towers are the two most important landmarks in Abidjan, and are thankfully located very close to each other. But for the rest of the tour, you will need to get a car for rent in Abidjan. Continue on to La Pyramide, a commercial complex that looks like it got picked up out of the sands of Egypt and dropped into Abidjan. Visit the wealthy Cocody area to see the presidential tower and the Hotel Ivoire. The Plateau is the CBD and still carries official heft as host to the Presidency and National Assembly, even though the country’s capital has been moved to Yamoussoukro.
You cannot come this far and go back without shopping for trinkets or African crafts to keep as mementos of the trip. Head to the Marché de Cocody on Boulevard de France for trinkets. African crafts can be found at Marché de Treichville on Avenue Victor Blaka in the Treichville area. If you need supplies or groceries, try the Hypermarché Sococé on Boulevard Latrille at Les Deux Plateaux. Treichville also has a fashion boutique called Patheo if you want to try on some of the local attire.
The Banco National Forest on the city’s outskirts is a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts. The tropical forest covers 7,500 acres and has a huge park inside with picnic facilities, an arboretum, and a restaurant. You can also spend some time at the Zoo D'Abidjan, located on the Route du Zoo. Another major attraction is Bassam, the most popular beach in Abidjan.
One of the pleasures of a stay in Abidjan is that you get to explore other destinations along the coast. Book your car rental in Abidjan right now and plan for a coastal drive starting with the adjacent historic town of Grand-Bassam. If you turn right at Port Bouet, you can drive past Dabou, Grand Lahou and Sassandra to San Pedro.
