Holon is a coastal city in Israel, located just 15 minutes outside Tel Aviv, with Bat Yam between it and the Mediterranean coast. Holon has recently become famous for two things – the legendary Design Museum and as a rebranded "Children's City." A visit to Holon is bound to be a fascinating trip, with attractions as varied as the Cactus Garden and the Samaritan neighborhood. If you are planning for a trip to Israel and Tel Aviv, book your car rental in Holon right now for a coastal exploration or road trip near the capital.
This is an organized tour which you can set up by calling the Holon Municipality general manager’s bureau at (03) 502-7245. There are three options, including a short two hour tour, a slightly longer four hour tour, and a full day trip of eight hours. You can also get a car for hire in Holon and make up your own schedule at your leisure. Highlights on the short tour include Pillbox Hill, the Design Museum, Mediatheque, Story Gardens, Peres Park, and the Israel Children's Museum. The full day trip additionally includes a stop at the Cactus Garden and a trip to the quaint Samaritan neighborhood.
The Design Museum Holon was opened in March 2010 in an iconic structure designed by Ron Arad. The museum, which cost the city 17 million dollars, offers a rotating series of exhibitions that put a spotlight on the role of design in our lives and provide a deeper understanding of the various forms it can take. You can see the best international work being done in industrial design, jewelry, textiles, fashion, and so on. The museum is located at Pinhas Eilon Street 8. The parking lot entrance can be accessed via Orna Porat Street. Make sure it is open when you visit, because they sometimes close the place to visitors in between exhibitions.
Holon recently rebranded itself as a Children's City. You will not find a Pied Piper or a Chocolate Factory here. But what you do have is a series of unique attractions that will fascinate both children and adults alike. There are 40 "Story Gardens" scattered all over the city. Each one brings children's stories alive through sculptures placed in a green space. Do not miss the Children's Museum, the Cartoon Museum, and the Puppet Center. The Yamit Water Park has wave pools, slides, and a separate Kids' World for little children. The water park also keeps adults happy with swimming pools, a spa, and lawns for picnics.
The easiest option for a day trip is to hit the coast and enjoy the beaches of Bat Yam all the way to Rishon LeZion. Get a car for rent in Holon and explore Tel Aviv and Jaffa (Tel Aviv-Yafo). You can continue past Tel Aviv along the coast to other beaches and resorts such as Aqueduct Beach near Caesarea. If you are willing to head inland, Jerusalem is just an hour away on Route 1. From there, it is another hour to the Dead Sea and its beach resorts like Ein Gedi Beach in Tamar.
