The largest city and Capital of the Isle of Man, Douglas is a hub-center for commerce, port-activities, and tourism. Graced by the flow of the Douglas River, the city has a wide bay shore of nearly two miles, which is one of the town’s most popular attractions. Let’s uncover some of the major things to do and places to see in this amazingly gorgeous city.
Douglas is a fairly large and populated city, which lies somewhat mid-way between Castletown and Ramsey in the Isle of Man. The main Airport of the region is barely 12 km away from the city and entertains direct flights from big cities such as Dublin, London, and Belfast. Most of the locals recommend that though the public transport system here is efficient and well-maintained, visitors should definitely get a car for rent in Douglas to allow for an ease of movement across the town and beyond.
Like any other tourist spot, Douglas has its fair share of unique experiences and quirky attractions up for offer. One can enjoy stunning views of the bay area by taking a ride on the lovely horse-trams that parade the promenades daily. Also, visit the TT Grandstand for an unparalleled bird’s-eye view of the biking track of 38 miles across the Mountain Course. Those who do rent a car in Douglas can also drive up to the proximal township of Laxey, which is deep-set in the valley. From here one can trek or bike to the Island’s only mountain peak, which offers enchanting views of the Seven Kingdoms on a clear day.
Even if one is in town for just a few days, there are some sites that are not to be missed at all. If nothing else, one can get a car for hire in Douglas and see a few of these places. One must definitely see the Great Union Camera Obscura on Douglas Head and the Manx Museum as well. The Tower of Refuge is beautiful as well, while performances at the Gaiety Theatre and Villa Marina are also exquisite. Those interested in sports should visit Noble’s Park and the National Sports Center. A trip to Douglas is truly incomplete if one does not visit some of these places.
Douglas is a charming city which has many attractions to keep its visitors well-occupied. If one is planning a trip here, they must definitely pre-book their accommodations and car rental because the town is bustling with visitors during the peak tourist seasons.
