The city of Tegucigalpa is the capital of Honduras. It is the country’s largest city and one of the two seats of power along with Comayaguela. Tegucigalpa or Tegus also happens to be a wonderful tourist destination with 400 years of colonial history and landmarks. Visitors will be torn between an array of parks and museums, along with shopping malls and markets. Not to mention El Picacho Park up on a hill, from where the giant statue of Christ looks down on the city. Get a car for rent in Tegucigalpa to see all these, and maybe head out to La Tigra National Park for a rainforest adventure.
This is a huge city, with a population of more than a million people. You cannot really take a tour and be done with it. You will have to make a choice between seeing some of the top attractions, or sticking to a category you like. For example, you could choose to visit all the parks, starting with Central Park and Parque La Leona near the historic city centre. Get a car for hire in Tegucigalpa and head for El Picacho, where you can see the statue of Christ up close, and also visit the National Zoo. La Tigra National Park is just a few miles outside the city. If you like museums, Tegucigalpa has an Archaeology Museum and the National Identity Museum. If you like shopping, your stops must include Mall-Multiplaza, Cascades Mall, and the San Isidrio Market.
The must-visit landmarks include the Metropolitan Cathedral, Presidential Palace, and the Basilica of the Virgin of Suyapa. You might also take some time to visit the National University. The Manuel Bonilla Theater is likewise worth a look-see. The best part of this self-guided colonial tour is a visit to the village of Valle de Angeles on the edges of La Tigra National Park. The entire village is one big colonial landmark.
The top three hotels in Tegucigalpa are the Clarion Hotel Real Tegucigalpa, Marriott Tegucigalpa, and the Hotel Real Intercontinental Tegucigalpa. The Clarion can be found at Colonia Florencia Oeste, while the Marriott is located on Boulevard Juan Pablo II. The Intercontinental can be found on Avenida Roble. If you prefer a cozier place where they offer every guest personal care and attention, check in at the Humuya Inn, located at #1150 Tegucigalpa.
Rainforests and colonial architecture are good for a couple of days. However, if you start getting an urge to hit the beaches, head for the coast at San Lorenzo. It is just an hour and a half away on CA-5. Book your car rental in Tegucigalpa right now and plan for day trips to the north coast beaches of Tela and La Ceiba. The north coast beaches are about four to five hours away from Tegucigalpa, so it may call for an overnight stay.
