Guyana is a country in South America. Venezuela and Suriname are neighbors sharing the Atlantic coast on either side, and Brazil locks it in from the landward side. The climate is hot and humid, but it can be cooler in the cities along the coast. Almost 240,000 of the country’s 752,000 people live in the capital city of Georgetown. New Amsterdam is a little bit further ahead and also a coastal city at the confluence of the Berbice and Canje rivers. Linden and Bartica are not on the coast, but Linden is located along the banks of the Demerara River. Bartica is also a riverfront port city, and located at the confluence of three rivers. No big surprise that Guyana means “land of many waters.” Get a car for hire in Guyana so that you can explore all these waters, and the many famous and not-so-famous attractions they hide.
Georgetown is the country’s capital and its largest city. Most visitors in Guyana coming from outside South America will be landing at Cheddi Jagan Temeri International Airport in Georgetown. Get a car for rent in Guyana so that you can explore magnificent attractions such as the 19th century St George's Cathedral, one of the world’s tallest wooden churches. Georgetown has plenty more 19th century buildings, including the Parliament Building, City Hall, and the Stabroek Market. Other must-visit attractions include Independence Square and the National Museum of Guyana. Family travelers may prefer to see the Guyana Zoo and the Botanical Gardens, while adults on their own can head out for a tour of the Demerara Rum Distillery. Oh, and everybody should see the floating Demerara Harbour Bridge.
New Amsterdam is located along the coast about 62 miles southeast of Georgetown. It is actually about four miles inland on the east bank of the Berbice River, where it meets the Canje River. This makes it even better for outdoor recreation, but what most people come here for is the Dutch colonial heritage. Do not miss the Town Hall, Mission Chapel, or the floating Berbice Bridge.
Fishing and mining is what the town of Linden is good at. This is the second largest town in Guyana, with around 60,000 people. Do not miss the Linden museum, Christiansburg Water Wheel, and the bauxite mine tour. If you have time, you can visit Gluck Island and Rockstone. If you are lucky, you may be here in time for the annual Fish Festival. But even if you miss this, the Demerara River provides plenty of opportunity to do some fishing on your own.
You can make the coastal drive from Georgetown to New Amsterdam a lot more interesting by making it a day trip and stopping at destinations along the way. Book your car rental in Guyana right now and plan for the coastal drive with stops at Haslington South and Haslington North, Enmore, Helena, Rosignol, and then Everton. You could also go west from Georgtown to Sea Spray, and then follow the Essequibo River inland to Bartica.
