Guam is the largest and southernmost of the Mariana Islands in the western Pacific Ocean. It is considered as USA territory even though the island takes care of its own governance. If Hawaii has the advantage of multiple islands with beautiful beaches, Guam makes up for it with 46 lovely white sand beaches on the same island. The climate is moderate and warm all year round, although it does rain from July to November. The population of almost 160,000 is mostly concentrated in the central region. The north is dominated by Anderson Air Base and the southern end of the island is undisturbed. The central region is where all the tourists and beach resorts can be found, in and around Tumon Bay and the capital city of Hagatna. You will have to get a car for hire in Guam if you want to explore the beaches and tourist attractions in Tumon, Hagatna, Ritidian, and other destinations on the island.
Hagatna (Agana) is the seat of power in Guam. If you did not know this was U.S. territory, they you will surely find out when you see the Statue of Liberty in Hagatna Bay. Get a car for rent in Guam and poke around historic structures such as Lujan House and the 1669 Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica. Must-visit attractions include Government House, Latte Park, and the Chamorro Village. Latte in this case refers to ancient stone pillars as old as 500 A.D. that were used by the native Chamorros to prop up their stone houses. The Chamorro Village allows you a peek into their culture and the chance to do in some fried chicken, bananas, and seafood.
Tumon Bay, about 10 minutes north of the capital, is where you will spend most of your holiday in Guam, lazing on the white sand beaches and soaking in the sun. The most popular beach on the island is Joseph Flores Beach Park. Mata'pang Beach Park and Faifa'i Beach in Tumon Bay are also worth a look-see.
Ritidian is at the northern tip of the island. This is a place of great natural beauty, protected as a part of the Guam National Wildlife Refuge. You can go swimming and explore the coral reefs, or foray into the limestone forests for a nature walk. There is a Nature Center that can tell you more about the wildlife, plants, caves, and archeological treasures. You can hike up to Mount Santa Rosa for a sweeping view of the north coast. But what most people are interested in is Ritidian Beach. This is a gem of a white sand beach, completely free of urban nuisances.
If you are done with the Tumon Bay beaches, then you might want to consider an uncharted coastal drive. Book your car rental in Guam right now and figure out how you can see the rest of the island. If you head south on the west coast past Hagatna, then you can visit Asan Beach National Park, Apra Harbor, and then the village of Agat. From here, you can cut across the island to Talofofo on the east coast. You can now double back up towards Mangilao, which is just a quick hop from A.B. Won Pat International Airport between Hagatna and Tumon Bay.
