Skopelos is a part of the Sporades group and is located in the western part of the Aegean Sea. Situated just off the eastern side of the Greece mainland, Skopelos is part of the Thessaly region. It is surrounded by amazing greenery and crystal clear beach waters. The popularity of this island received a boost from the Hollywood movie “Mamma Mia!” which was filmed here. Now you can see thousands of tourists coming here every year and enjoying this beautiful place. Despite its popularity, Skopelos is still a great place to enjoy some authentic Greek culture and quaint surroundings.
Skopelos town is the first place that you should visit on the island. It is the main port and the capital of the island. You can take a car for hire in Skopelos and drive around this town, which seems like it came out of a fairy tale. The lovely whitewashed houses with red roofs and flower-laden balconies make it a picture perfect location. To experience the history and culture of Skopelos you must visit the Folklore museum that houses traditional costumes, paintings, old furniture, and other artifacts that represent the island.
Glossa is the second most visited place in Skopelos and is just 25 kilometers away from the capital. You can take a car for rent in Skopelos and drive in the northern direction to reach Glossa. This village is located on the side of a mountain and is surrounded by pine forests. Loutraki is the name of the port here and many interesting sites are located around it. A few Roman bath ruins and the 5th century ruins of an Athena temple can be found here. Apart from this, Glossa has great seafood and restaurants where you can dine and have some authentic Greek dishes.
When you rent a car in Skopelos and head in the western direction from the capital town, you will come to a quaint settlement just 20 kilometers away, known as Elios. This village is a serene location that was re-built in the year 1981 after an earthquake destroyed the previous town. Elios is also known as Neo Klima and is located among thick pine trees. Coming to this village is a relaxing experience and this makes Elios a tourist attraction in itself. The simple and slow life here makes for a great weekend getaway.
Skopelos is a small island with a big fun quotient. You can visit the nice ports or just hike a few meters to watch the blue waters in all their glory. This place offers spectacular views and shutterbugs will have a jolly good time taking snap shots of the most wonderfully unique landscapes.
