Skala is a coastal village which has become a leading tourist attraction in Greece. The village lies at the southeastern tip of Kefalonia, borders Poros which is 12 kilometres away, and has Ionian as the nearest Island to it. The village was built after the 1953 earthquake, which destroyed the old village whose ruins can still be seen behind the new village. Skala has become the largest resort in southern Kefalonia and draws thousands of tourists every summer. A bit of its Roman occupation history can be seen on the ruins of a Roman villa, which has magnificent mosaic floor.
Skala's main attraction is the long expansive sandy and shingle beaches with unpolluted crystalline waters and pine trees. The beaches are simply divine, and a day out on the beautiful sunbeds will leave you tanned and refreshed. Some areas on the beach and the Argostoli lagoon were declared conservation areas that are worth a visit. Here, you can see the rare loggerhead turtles.
Enjoy a wide range of water sports which range from water skiing, parasailing, scuba diving and motor boat racing. Some sports are held on the beach fronts while some are in other locations, which are accessible with a car for hire in Skala. Take a guided boat ride and venture into the rocks and caves off the beaches, as you take in the breathtaking sites in Skala and its surroundings. Go for a swim to ease the afternoon heat, or relax by the poolside overlooking the sea with a beautiful view of the skyline and the deep blue sea.
Spoil yourself in Skala and shop for gifts and local antiques which will always bring fond memories of this lovely place. The shops are located on the main street but be sure to look out for many other hidden shops off the main street. Drive the kids to the park in a car for rent in Skala or stroll in the park after your long walks in the streets. The park is well maintained and is a perfect picnic area for your family.
Sample the wide selection of quality restaurants and taverns which offer different cuisines and delicacies. Apostolis is a great tavern just minutes off the main street. The tavern ambience is great and has a garden where you can enjoy your dinner. Sample the amazing menu of finger-licking food and do not forget the desserts. The staff is friendly and ready to give you a dining experience of a lifetime.
Skala is a small heaven and its beauty can only be experienced in person. Explore the nearby towns like Argostoli whose beauty is captivating. Admire the Venetian castle in Thassos and the port in Sami. It is advisable to book hotels and a vehicle with a car rental in Skala in advance due to limited availability and high demand. A well-planned vacation will be a lifetime experience worth every penny.
