Elounda is a small fishing town with a rich history located in north eastern Crete. It has influences from the Roman and Byzantine era in the 5th A.D to the German occupation during the Second World War. A part of the town is said to have sunk into the sea. In clear waters, the lost city of Olous can actually be seen.
The city was predominantly a fishing hub, but also flourished in farming, salt extraction and emery mining. The town has, however, grown into a busy tourist centre. Famous and distinguished people spend their holidays in the finest resort hotels. The town has beautiful sandy beaches, crystal clear seas, and is very serene for a quiet getaway. You can get a clear view of Mirabello Bay on your way to Elounda from the airport.
The main attractions in Elounda are the historical sites and the ruins associated with the leper’s colony. A walk to the higher parts of the island reveals a spectacular view of the bay and some of the ruins of the old leper hospital. Drive to Spinalonga in a car for hire in Elounda and see the most powerful and least penetrable fortresses on Crete. These fortifications and ruins are very well maintained and provide a clear understanding of the historical background of the Crete Islands.
There is a lot to do both indoors and outdoors in Elounda. You can treat yourself to the best spa treatment at the Six Senses Spa, voted the world’s best spa by Travel Magazine in 2007. You can rent a car in Elounda to get to the spa, where there is a wide selection of treatments. These are guaranteed to leave your body relaxed and rejuvenated, as you enjoy a spectacular view of the sea. A trip on the Happy Train is perfect, as it takes you through Plaka and into the mountains. You can then go on to Selestat, where you can visit the old, breath-taking olive press.
Having some of the finest resorts and restaurants, Elounda is bound to entice your taste buds with the best Greek menus. Since most of the eateries serve an international clientele, a wide range of cuisines are available. The Ergospasio restaurant is a must visit, with a perfect location next to the sea and a wonderful view of Elounda.
Elounda is low key at night, with live music in some bars only during the weekends. There are, however, many cocktail bars where you can enjoy your drinks to the backdrop of soft Greek music. If you’re looking for a more energetic and fun filled night, a car from a car rental in Elounda will take you to Agia Nicholaos. This is about 5 miles away, and it’s where you find the bars and discos that run into the early morning hours. The peace and beauty of Elounda will definitely make your trip memorable.
