Stade is located on the River Elbe about 37 miles from Hamburg in Lower Saxony. The entire old town and Hanseatic Port filled with half-timbered houses are major tourist attractions and the reason why Stade is one of the major stops on the German Timber-Frame Road. The city dates back to 994 AD, so there is no shortage of historic buildings, churches and museums. But the maritime history and attractions are what make this city so unique. You will need to get a car for hire in Stade if you intend to be a tourist here.
You can begin your tour with a stop at the tourist information office at Hansestraße 16. Assuming you already have got a car for rent in Stade and you are now armed with tourist brochures, tips and maps to help guide you around the town, you can start the tour by visiting the old town hall and the Hanseatic Port. Admire the half-timbered houses and the Schwedenspeicher (Swedish Granary Museum). Do not miss the Greundiek Boat Museum or the 19th century Grauerort fortress. You might also want to visit the Gothic St. Cosmae Lutheran Church and the Leaning Tower of St. Wilhadi.
The German Timber-Frame Road is a heritage route that marks towns famous for half-timbered houses from the River Elbe, all the way through to the Black Forest and Lake Constance. The first section, which stretches from the River Elbe to the Weser Hills, includes seven towns. The route begins (or ends) at Stade, so you have only one way to go. The next town on the route is Nienburg (Weser), followed by Bad Essen, Stadthagen, Alfeld, Einbeck and Northeim.
If the timber-frame road is too long for your comfort, then there are plenty of scenic and relaxing short drive trips. The best day-trip from Stade is probably the one hour drive on the A7 to Hamburg. You can track the River Elbe all the way, and stop en-route to admire attractions in other riverside towns like Jork and the Finkenwerder Island. You might even enjoy a nature exploration in the Buxtehude moor. If you go the other way, you can drive right up to Cuxhaven in about an hour, where the Elbe empties itself into the North Sea.
There are around six agencies offering a car rental in Stade for visitors. Half of them are bunched up together on Altländer St., and a couple more are on the Hamburg Rd. But instead of trying to physically locate these agencies, you can easily compare them online and find the best deal on offer. Book your vehicle online right now, so that you can be ready to roll the minute you arrive in Stade.
