Speyer was founded by the Romans, and counts as one of Germany's oldest cities. Located along the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate, Speyer has the Imperial Cathedral from 1061 as the crown jewel among its historic attractions. Germany is full of historic old towns with castles and churches, but very few cities can stand up to Speyer in this regard. You will need to get a car for hire in Speyer if you plan on visiting all the churches and other attractions here.
It is not often that one gets to stand in a Cathedral as magnificent and yet as old as the Imperial Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Steven here in Speyer. Built by emperors from 1030 to 1061, the Cathedral is the first structure to ever have a gallery around the whole building. The crypt with eight emperors and kings and four queens is a powerful symbol of just how much importance this Cathedral has in Germany's history. Since 1980, the Cathedral has been protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not so well-preserved is the 1090 Jewish Courtyard and Synagogue adjacent the Imperial Cathedral. Assuming you have already got a car for rent in Speyer, you must also visit the Saint Magdalena Convent from 1232 and the unique Trinity Church from 1717 with wood carvings on the Altar and the wooden ceiling painted over with Old and New Testament scenes. Your tour also has to include the Memorial Church and St. Ludwig Church.
