Ludwigshafen is a city in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, placed on the mighty river Rhine. With Heidelberg, Mannheim and the neighboring region it forms the Rhine-Neckar Area. Germanic and Celtic tribes have inhabited this area before the Romans conquered the region around the 1st century B.C., and a Roman military fort was constructed. During the World War 1 and 2 it became a main manufacturing place for chemical ingredients, used for explosives and gunpowder as well as much of the gas used on the Western Front.
Use the services like car for rent in Ludwigshafen on your arrival at the Frankfurt International airport, 80 km north of Ludwigshafen. The city is more of a main player in industrial economic terms than in tourism and offers therefore a limited variety of attractions. But because of its good location, with numerous picturesque towns and villages nearby, it make sense to choose this place as a base camp. The townsfolk are warm hearted and like a chat with you over a drink or a bite.
Rent a car in Ludwigshafen and cruise through the city to see the two main features of downtown Ludwigshafen. There is the half-destroyed monument of the ‘Lutherkirche’ and next ‘The Pfalzbau’, housing the ‘Staatsphilharmonie’ and ‘Wilhelm-Hack-Museum’. More south are the ‘Musikantenviertel ‘and the ‘Malerviertel’
Hire a car in Ludwigshafen and drive to the ancient university town of Heidelberg. Attracting over 3 million visitors per year, this figure tells a lot. The downtown featuring cobblestoned narrow streets rimmed with beautiful old buildings and houses and overlooked by the impressive old castle. This is what Heidelberg is really famous for. You have to pay the castle a visit! Climb the quite steep footpath up the hill or enjoy a ride with the mountain railway to its top. Another lovely hike is the ‘Philosphenweg’, offering great views of Heidelberg’s old town from across the River Neckar before enjoying one of the fine little market places and get some of its well known delicatessen. Why not buy a few of them before heading to the river and board a ship for a leisure cruise to the surrounding area. Drive to Schwetzingen and stroll the famous castle gardens before visiting the nice old town of Weinheim for a deserved rest. Schriesheim, with its fabulous Castle above is another picturesque small town you should have seen. On the way back to Heidelberg you pass through Speyer with its cathedral and the fantastic old houses. Take your time for an easy stroll.
But the Rhine Neckar Area has so much more to offer that a rental is most recommended. You will be free to head anywhere in no time. Come and have a unique holiday in this fantastic area!
