Giessen or Gießen is a University town in Hesse, located along the banks of the Lahn River. Given that Giessen has tens of thousands of students, the entertainment here is bound to be tilted towards youthful pursuits. Apart from its urban pleasures, the Lahn River which cuts through the town provides for a lot of natural attractions and activities. There are plenty of gardens, museums and parks, and you will surely need to get a car for hire in Giessen if you plan on being a tourist here.
You can start your tour with a stop at the tourist information office at Berliner Platz 2. Hopefully you already have got a car for rent in Giessen, and can continue on to the University of Giessen and Liebig Street 8 for the next stop on the tour. Here you will find the fascinating Mathematikum with its "hands-on" mathematical exhibits and the Liebig Museum nearby which was originally Justus von Liebig's laboratory. Do not miss the botanical gardens and the Oberhessisches Museum at the old castle on Brandplatz 2. There is an old cemetery from the 1530s, which is popular for romantic walks and the Schwanenteich or Swan Lake is a good place for nature lovers. There is a Lahn Aquarium and Lahn Park, and a lot more parks and gardens if you are interested.
The area around Giessen is a virtual treasure-trove for visitors. You will find attractions like the Schiffenberg Monastery about 5 miles south of the city center on Licher Rd. It is not just a historic attraction, but also a good place for recreation and an event venue with a nice restaurant and a beer garden. Go the same distance the other way on the K25, and you end up at the Wood and Technology Museum in Wettenberg. You might also want to take a look at the Grand Palace in Buseck, whose chapel is apparently a popular place for destination weddings. You can go to Wetzlar and see the historic old town with its Churches and old half-timbered homes, and maybe stop at Lahnau en-route with its really old Roman era historic attractions.
The best short drive from here is to Marburg, which is just 25 minutes away on the B3. You might also want to stop at Lollar along the way, since it has the oldest Church in Hesse which is now an open-air museum in Hesse Park. If you head out on the A45 past Lahnau and Wetzlar, you can reach Siegen in less than an hour.
There are plenty of agencies with depots here offering a car rental in Giessen for travelers. You can find many of them lined up on Marburg Rd. and Licher St. However, it would be a lot easier to simply use an online tool to compare all the agencies and find the best deal. Book your vehicle right now, so that you can be ready to roll on your city tour the minute you reach Giessen.
