Bernau bei Berlin (Bernau by Berlin) is a nice little city with a mix of historic and natural attractions, located about 6 miles or so north of Berlin. If you find the time to visit towns near Bernau, do not miss Barnim with a Church that dates back to the 13th century or the old Churches in Ahrensfelde across the Berliner Ring Road. You will also want to visit Wandlitz, which has the Wandlitzsee Lake and quaint museums like the International Museum of Circus Performers and an agricultural museum. Biesenthal has a fascinating and preserved old town area, with a huge old Oak tree before a timber-framed town hall from 1762 and other buildings and Churches that date back to the 13th and 18th centuries.
Obviously, Berlin is the most popular option for a day trip, with a bare minimum half hour drive on the B2 or A10. You can also take a detour on the A10 to Strausberg, or continue on beyond Berlin to Potsdam or Schönefeld.
