French Polynesia, which is nominally attached to France, is comprised of island groups in the South Pacific Ocean. The climate is warm, and does not change much except when it rains from November through April. There are five island groups, with the biggest one being the Society Islands group. This group is divided into the Windward and Leeward Islands. The Windward group includes the islands of Tahiti and Moorea. Bora Bora in the Leeward group, is one of the most famous tourist resorts in the Pacific. Among the other groups, the coral reef atoll of Rangiroa in the Tuamotu Islands group is extremely beautiful. Around 178,000 of the total 267,000 population live in Tahiti. Papeete is its capital city. Get a car for hire in French Polynesia to explore Papeete, Faaa, and other destinations at your leisure.
Most visitors usually arrive and leave Tahiti through Faaa International Airport, which is less than 10 minutes from the capital city of Papeete. Get a car for rent in French Polynesia and visit all the beaches and tourist attractions in and near the capital. Tourist attractions include the waterfront, Cathedral of Notre Dame, and the Presidential Palace. Do not miss the pearls in the Robert Wan Pearl Museum, and the art exhibits in the Paul Gauguin Museum.
An hour’s flight from Tahiti will bring you to Bora Bora. This is the capital of romance in the Pacific, with pristine white sand beaches and emerald green waters, with multi-colored fish darting around in the corals. Visitors will find everything they need in the resorts, from underwater bungalows to full-service spas and fine dining. Mount Otemanu looms overhead in the background, and the lagoon waters are brighter than usual with neon lighting.
The coral atoll of Rangiroa is one of the greatest dive sites in French Polynesia. The turquoise waters of the lagoon are encircled by 240 tiny coral islets, which are just a few feet above the sea. The two main villages are Avatoru and Tiputa, and there, you will get to see unique sights such as coral churches and one of the biggest pearl farms in French Polynesia. The best beach is the Blue Lagoon Motu, while Tiputa Point is a popular picnic spot. You can check out the dive sites and snorkel around in the corals, or take a glass-bottom boat tour of the lagoon which offers an incredible 150 feet of visibility from the surface.
This is the biggest island in the entire Pacific, so you have a bit of driving to do if you plan to explore the whole island. If you are looking for the best beach on the island, head for La Plage de Maui at Tahiti Iti, all the way round the island at the other end from Papeete. Book your car rental in French Polynesia right now and plan a coastal round trip from Papeete and Faaa to Papao and Tahiti Iti, and then back round the other side of the island.
