Over the years, this city has been invaded by the British, taken over by Napoleon, and seized during World War II as well. It's been an important location in history by virtue of its proximity to UK. In recent times, the city of Octeville was merged with Cherbourg, and the place was renamed Cherbourg-Octeville in 2000.
