Car hire Varadero information

Varadero is a popular and incredibly beautiful beach resort in Cuba, located on the northern tip of the island in Matanzas province. The town and its superb 12 mile long white sand beach are located precariously on the unbelievably thin Hicacos Peninsula that sticks out a long way into the Caribbean Sea to form the Bay of Cárdenas. Visitors can expect luxurious beach hotels, the only 18-hole championship golf course in Cuba and an isolated nature reserve with untouched beaches and forests. Coupled with old mansions and family attractions like the Delfinario (dolphin pool), it makes for an exclusive beach holiday far removed from the bedlam and hassles in Havana. You will need to get a car for hire in Varadero to see all this and visit towns nearby like Cárdenas and Matanzas.

Rent a Car in Varadero for Sightseeing

No doubt the main attraction in Varadero is the beach. But if you hire a car in Varadero and head out to explore all the attractions, there are plenty of things to do and see, like Josone's Park. It is actually an artificial lake and an old mansion, which now houses multiple restaurants and a lakeshore bar. You can visit Villa Xanadú, the palatial home of the founder of Varadero. Adjacent is the Golf Club with the only 18-hole course in Cuba. The golf course combines carefully constructed mini-islands and lakes with the natural obstacles provided by the sea. Do not miss the Bellamar Caves, and perhaps the most famous of all the attractions is Delfinario, a natural pool filled with dolphins.

Beach Guide for Varadero Visitors

All the major resort hotels here are right on the 12 mile beach, with the white sand right outside the door and nothing ahead but the crystal clear turquoise waters of the Caribbean. Follow the series of virgin cays all the way to the northeast, to the tip of the peninsula at Punta Hicacos. Here you will find the Varahicacos Ecological Reserve. Apart from virgin beaches and dive sites for scuba divers, the ecological reserve has a forest with all kinds of birds and reptiles and historic attractions like the ruins of La Calavera Salt Works.

The nearest city is Cárdenas, a quaint little place with weirdly shaped structures. There is a bus stop shaped like a huge nose, and there are concrete casts of a bicycle, a big crab and a horse-drawn carriage. The harbor at Matanzas is a beautiful sight, and you might also want to visit Guamá where you can visit the crocodile breeding center and taste crocodile meat. You can take a nice 2-hour coastal drive on CD and Via Blanca all the way to Havana. Along the way, stop and enjoy seaside resorts like Carbonera, Matanzas, Puerto Escondido, Playa Jibacoa and Santa Cruz del Norte.

How to Get a Car for Rent in Varadero

There are currently no car rental agencies with offices or depots in the city or at Varadero Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport (VRA). But most of the hotels provide a car rental in Varadero for their guests, arranged via partnerships with agencies based in Havana. We suggest you do the same by comparing the Havana-based agencies online and booking a vehicle right now. Make sure to specify the pickup and drop-off point as Varadero, either at the airport or at your hotel.
