Rovinj is a coastal tourist hotspot in Istria, Croatia. Located on the northern Adriatic Coast between Pula and Porec, the ancient city offers historic monuments, old Churches and plenty of natural attractions. Tourists can roam around the Old Town or rent a car in Rovinj and head out to see natural wonders like the Limska Draga Fjord and the Fantasy Quarry. The destinations nearby are just as impressive, including the medieval town of Dvigrad and the Soardo-Bembo Castle in Bale.
But the best place to get a feel of Rovinj is in the old town. Walk around the old town and take in the narrow buildings, tiny squares and strange chimneys. The old town still has three of the original seven gates that date back to the 7th century AD. The Balbijev luk or archway at the old outer gate is "new," being from the 17th century. For the rest of the attractions, you will need to hire a car in Rovinj. See the heritage museum in a baroque palace and poke around the Valdibora market. Do not miss the art scene in Grisia, and a view of the harbor near the city center. In fact, the Church of Saint Euphemia which looms over the city center is a good place to start your tour.
What attracts most visitors to Rovinj are the natural attractions and wonders. There are no natural sand beaches in Rovinj, but the bays are wonderful places to spend the day. The town has trucked in fine gravel to make it possible for people to enjoy swimming and water-front activities. You can find these beaches at Kuvi Bay and Lone Bay. You must see the Limska Draga Fjord, which has been declared as an area of outstanding natural beauty and is now protected as a nature reserve. Do not miss the Zlatni rt Forest Park, the Palud marsh ornithological reserve and the Dvije Sestrice (two sisters) Islands. The Fantasy Quarry or Monfiorenzo Cave en-route to Pula is a geological spectacle, and people come here from all over the world to see it.
Perhaps the most popular tourist spot near Rovinj is the medieval town of Dvigrad, on the way from Rovinj to Kanfanar. Do not miss the Soardo-Bembo Castle in Bale and the Holy Trinity Chapel in Žminj. Those interested in other coastal resorts may want to head for either Pula or Porec.
